Do You Understand The Depression Illness?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:48 am

Depression affects millions of people around the globe every year. This disorder does not care about an age group either. Depression in children is just as prevalent as it is in adults.

However, many who have this disorder do not seek treatment because of the negative connotations that are associated with mental health illnesses. It is one of the disorders of the mental health world that can be treated if just given the chance.

Many people do not understand exactly what it is. A depressive disorder is an “illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts” according to the NIMH. It affects everything about a person.

Every aspect of their life is invaded from the way they eat and sleep to the functions of how they think. Clinical depression is an illness that will not go away on its own. People with it need to understand that they cannot just will this away. Without treatment, a person can remain ill for years, and this can affect their life dramatically.

Several ways are available to help with treating it. Herbal remedies, medications, and psychotherapies are a few of the resources that medical professionals have when deciding on a treatment plan for a person diagnosed with it.

The most prevalent method doctors usually help someone who is diagnosed with clinical depression is to prescribe an antidepressant. Various types are on the market, and if taken correctly can help to reduce the feelings that are associated with depression stress.

Another thing that people with it must do in order to get better is to talk about what is going on in their life. This is called psychotherapy, and it is usually performed with a psychiatrist or psychologist.

These medical professionals are trained in great detail in order to help a person cope with what is going on. One thing to remember is that medication alone is not the answer. Unfortunately, a magic pill does not exist for it. But facing one’s demons along with medication can make the difference.

Depression is a real illness that is treatable if only a person will seek the help they so desperately need. Family and loved ones are also affected when a person has it.

If people will become educated about the signs and symptoms that accompany this disease, maybe human suffering can be alleviated. If a family member sees that someone is depressed, they should step in and help that person get treatment.

It is not something to be ashamed of. It requires real help that is so readily available if only a person will ask for it.

Steps to Losing Weight and Keeping It Off

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 6:44 am

What is the true key to weight loss? Is it knowing exactly what to eat? How far to run? How to mix HCG? Or is it knowing how to control the urges that force us to eat when were stressed out?

The truth is, if you knew the exact key how to safely loss the exact amount of weight you wanted you could package your secrets and sell them to the highest bidder. Nobody exactly knows the best way to lose weight. Sure, the good ol’ “eat well and exercise” works well, but without proper planning it won’t keep the weight off. And with the New Year’s resolution season coming up, its worth taking a look at the best ways to not only lose your target weight but also keep it off.

Any good weight loss plan starts with both eating well and finding an exercise program that works for you. The worst thing you can do is start your diet by saying “I’m going to eat nothing but veggies and brown rice and I’m going to run three miles every day”. That’s just not going to happen on a consistent basis. Aiming high is a great idea, except that it will burn you out within a few days.

Instead of going for the gold right away (no pun intended), begin by making small goals for yourself. Start out by walking 30 minutes a day four days a week. Then, after a few weeks, maybe run 2 days a week and walk another three. You can add some calisthenics in after a few weeks. Always check your heart rate and make sure you stay hydrated no matter what you do.

The same moderation should be used when trying to map out a meal plan to go along with your exercise. First, think about portion sizes. American’s have a tendency to eat portion sizes that dwarf those in the rest of the world. Steak serving sizes should only be about the size of a playing card, not the size of a small truck. Instead of loading your plates with carbs such as pasta and potatoes, instead start eating vegetables with lemon and olive oil. Instead of soda drink natural juices or water. If you must, a diet soda can be utilized.

Next, set realistic goals for yourself. If proper diet and exercise is utilized you can expect to lose 2-4 pounds a week. After a few weeks you might see a drop off in the amount lost, but that’s only natural. Maybe start some weight training to get some definition. The key is making it fun. If you don’t enjoy the process and have some fun it you’re going to slip. That’s how you gain the weight back.

How to Determine if Shared Web Hosting is Right For You

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:39 am

***If you’re out there looking for the best way to get your web site online, you’ve probably run into some confusion over web hosting. To put it mildly, there are many choices, and for most people the options can be overwhelming. Let’s take a look at shared web hosting, which for most people is the best alternative.

Shared web hosting is the type that almost everyone uses. Each server (computer) that the host maintains will be assigned a certain number of web sites. All of these sites share the resources of that server, and each has an allocated amount of space and bandwidth on that server.

Shared hosting will provide sufficient disk space and resources for most individual, hobby, or small business sites that don’t have a lot of traffic or tons of multimedia running on their site. A certain amount of system resources are allocated for all the sites on the server, and they share these resources.

While this won’t happen with most shared hosting setups, it is possible for one or two sites to experience large traffic or bandwidth usage spikes, which can pull down the performance of other sites on that server.

If you put some really cool videos on your site and promote them heavily, this can result in a lot of traffic and a lot of bandwidth being consumed. Too much of this will affect the other websites hosted on the same server, and possibly cause slowed performance. The top hosts anticipate these issues, and have people on staff around the clock who monitor and adjust things as needed.

Great news – shared web hosting isn’t expensive any more. It is very affordable for almost anyone. You can get reliable hosting for 5-10 dollars a month, which was unheard of a few years ago. Prices have dropped considerably. Go for a month to month plan at first, to see if your host’s support and performance is acceptable. If it is, you can sign on for longer periods at discounted rates – an even better deal.

If you are also are interested in creating your own website from scratch, be careful with the hosting deals where you are offered site creation tools. Some of these are very easy to use and quite appealing, but a few are proprietary tools and should you choose to leave someday, moving your site to another host could be difficult. There are lots of excellent site creation tools out there that aren’t tied into hosting plans – if you want to use this type of tool, this is your best bet.

In conclusion, I believe that shared web hosting works well, and is the best solution for most users. For just a few dollars per month, you get more space and options than you’ll probably ever use. There is always the option to move over to dedicated hosting later, if your site grows large enough to warrant it.-

Genital Warts in Men Is More Common than You Might Think

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:33 am

There’s no doubt about it. Genital warts in men is a very common condition, but for those that suffer from it, that doesn’t supply much comfort. It’s embarrassing and most men simply do not want to speak to anyone about it. However, there is some good news concerning the treatment of genital warts in men.

How Many People Suffer from This Condition?

You would probably be surprised to learn that this condition affects nearly 20 million people across the United States, with an additional six million cases diagnosed every year. This probably doesn’t make you feel much better, but at least you know you’re not alone. These numbers also mean that there is constant research on how to cure this condition.

What Causes Venereal Warts?

The Human Papilloma Virus, or HPV, is responsible. While there are over 100 strains of HPV, only about 30 cause this specific condition. Since it’s a sexually transmitted disease, most of the time it’s spread through oral, vaginal, or anal sex with an infected partner. Experts estimate that approximately 66% of the people that are infected contracted the disease through sexual activity. Other possible ways of transmission include childbirth and contact with fomites. Fomites are objects that carry the disease form one person to another, such as bath towels or contaminated medical equipment.

What Are the Symptoms?

Most cases will start with grey, pink, or red cauliflower shaped lesions. They may appear flat or raised. These may be present on the penis, urethra, and around the rectal area. In most instances, it’s not painful, but there are few cases that can cause extreme pain. Some will experience very little growth in the size of the warts, but others may find it grows to a huge mass.

Is There a Cure?

Currently, there is no cure for genital warts in men. However, there are several treatment options that can make the disease more manageable. These might include several over-the-counter products that work by destroying the tissue of the wart. These are relatively easy-to-use, cheap, and safe.

If these products don’t work, then your physician may speak with you about cryosurgery (freezing the lesions off), the LEEP procedure (cutting the lesions off), or carbon dioxide surgery.

In Closing

Genital warts in men are very common. There is no cure, but there are several options for treatment. The best thing to do about this condition is to prevent the spread of the disease. This means you need to speak with your sexual partners before you become intimate.

Why Does Compost Stink?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:30 pm

***Many people have somehow acquired the misconception that compost normally stinks, that it must be a smelly affair. Nothing can be further from the truth. An earthy scent is normal and inoffensive, but a well-built compost shouldn’t produce unpleasant odors.

So if you have a bad smell coming from your compost bin, answer these few questions to help determine the problem and find out how to fix the problem.

1. Did you accidentally throw in leftover meat or bones with other composting material?

If you did, remove it quickly, for you will definitely get a rotten smell coming from the bin.

Meat and meat bones should never be added to your compost pile because…

a) Especially in the summer, heat causes the meat to rot quickly and within hours develop a very bad odor.

b) Cooked meat is “dead” food so adds nothing to your compost.

c) Finally it attracts animals who will tear your bin apart to get to the meat.

2. Did you accidentally throw milk or cheese products in the bin?

Again, milk and cheese will turn acrid and cause a smell in your bin, so all must be removed from the bin.

3. Is there an ammonia smell coming from the pile?

If so, your pile has too much “green” stuff such as fruit peels, tea leaves, vegetables, and peelings.

To change this condition, you must mix in brown stuff such as buckwheat hulls, dried grass clippings, paper, or peat moss (and the list goes on). In other words, the compost pile must be rebuilt.

The best way to create a “non-smelly pile” is by beginning with one layer of “greens” followed by one layer of “browns”, and continuing this process of alternating each layer until you have no more ingredients to put into the pile.

4. Is there a “rotten egg” smell coming from the pile?

If so, there is too little air getting to the center of the pile. Since air provides the necessary oxygen which enables bacteria to carry out “aerobic’ or non-smelly decomposition, it is very important to keep plenty of air flowing through the compost pile to help the decomposer organisms do their job.

Because air penetrates only the first few inches of the pile, it needs help to reach the center. Therefore if you suddenly get that nasty rotten egg smell around the compost, it means that anaerobic bacteria are moving in, and the pile may simply need to breathe. (Oh, the pile will decompose, but the decomposition will be accompanied by this rotten egg smell.)

There are five ways to add air to your compost pile…air which is absolutely necessary in order to develop the high temperatures needed to kill harmful bacteria and speed the process of decomposition:

A) Turn you pile inside out with a garden fork

B) If you do not want to do the work of turning the pile, try stirring it with a stick instead (much harder to achieve results

C) Use an aerator tool, a rod with flaps on one end and a handle on the other normally found at a garden center.

D) Create an air stack by building your compost pile around a perforated pipe, a bundle of long twigs, or a tube of wire mesh.

E) Build your compost pile on a raised platform of loosely spaced boards and allow air to be drawn up from the bottom. If you choose this method, be sure to sprinkle soil throughout the compost to add those essential soil bacteria.

I have had up to three compost bins in my back yard, and I have never been bothered by smell. So if you follow the above steps, you should not have any more problems with “smell.”-

How Traffic Signals Can Cause Auto Accidents

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:28 am

Did you ever think that traffic lights could actually increase the likelihood of auto accidents?

You probably don?t think much about traffic lights at all ? except to get irritated when you?re stuck at a red light with no other cars in sight. In two instances, however, cities trying to save the environment ? or make a few extra dollars ? can inadvertently put drivers at risk and increase the odds of a car accident, personal injury, or even wrongful death, just by toying with the basics of their traffic lights.

? Case #1 ? Low Energy Use, High Winter Risk

In recent years, many traffic lights have been converted from conventional halogen incandescent bulbs to arrays of LED (light emitting diodes) bulbs. The LED bulbs have several obvious advantages ? since they use much less energy they?re both ?green? friendly, and they also lower energy costs dramatically ? in a major intersection, that savings could reach $600 per year for a city. In fact, Wisconsin?s state Transportation Department saves an incredible $750,000 a year thanks to the new technology. LEDs also have a much longer life than the older bulbs.

So what?s not to like?

Well, the LED lights? greatest advantage is also its greatest weakness. When a winter storm hits, the hi-tech bulbs don?t burn enough energy to melt away snow and ice. Which means the traffic light can easily get crusted over and not visible to a driver. Dozens of auto accidents and one wrongful death that occurred in April of 2009 in Illinois have been attributed to this problem.

There is an easy lo-tech fix, however ? a $20 Snow Scoop Visor can be attached to the traffic lights in question to prevent snow and ice build-up. Also, to be fair, it should be noted that the LEDs shine about four times more brightly than incandescents, rendering them far more visible after dark and in foggy conditions, meaning they have probably saved a great many lives by preventing some car accidents.

? Case #2 ? Abandoning Caution with the Caution Light

To many, many drivers, when a green light turns yellow, that?s their signal to speed up to get through the intersection and beat the red light.

Many cities, though, when they install cameras at intersections to catch drivers running red lights, exacerbate the problem by actually decreasing the amount of time the yellow light flashes ? so they can ticket more drivers and collect more revenue. The problem is that shortening the yellow light duration increases the chances of auto accidents ? because drivers on either side of the light don?t have enough time to react.

There have been many reports of increased car accidents, wrongful deaths, and personal injury cases as a result of these attempts to ?cash in? with the cameras.

As a personal injury lawyer practicing in Seattle, Washington, I was gratified to see a bill recently introduced in the Washington state legislature designed to lock in a longer yellow light length ? and to reduce the fines from the red light cameras, so no cities in Washington would be tempted to make money by raising the risk of intersection car accidents occurring.

Every action causes a reaction. That?s why even the smallest of adjustments to traffic light usage should be studied before they?re enacted.

Soldiers prepare to send bodies of four comrades, journalist back to Canada

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:41 am

KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan — The deaths of four Canadian soldiers and a journalist in a roadside bombing two days before the New Year ushers in a sombre 2010 for many Canadians.

DND Handouts; Chris Bolin handout

Sgt. George Miok, 28, Sgt. Kirk Taylor, 28, Cpl. Zachery McCormack, 21, and Pte. Garrett William Chidley, 21, were killed Wednesday when their armoured vehicle hit an improvised explosive device four kilometres south of Kandahar City. Michelle Lang, a Calgary Herald reporter covering the conflict for Canwest News Service, also died in the attack.

Five others were wounded, including four soldiers and a Canadian civilian worker.

The fallen soldiers were widely praised Thursday as dedicated and passionate men who cared for their comrades and their country.

Lang will be honoured alongside them in a formal ramp ceremony at Kandahar Airfield Friday before their aircraft takes off to bring them home. The bodies are expected to arrive back in Canada on Sunday afternoon, landing at Canadian Forces Base Trenton. From there, they’ll travel in a convoy along the Highway of Heroes, a 172-kilometre stretch of Highway 401 between Trenton and Toronto.

“Michelle will be transported back with our four lost soldiers,”said Lt.-Col. Chris Lemay. “We think it’s the right thing to do. This is the first reporter who was part of the embed program that we’ve lost. This is a first for the Canadian Forces.”

Brig.-Gen. Daniel Menard, Commander of Task Force Kandahar, offered heartfelt words about each of the victims.

Miok, based in Edmonton, was remembered as a “dedicated” officer who was well-liked by his troops. “The welfare of his soldiers came first, and they knew they could turn to him for advice and guidance.”

Taylor, based in Yarmouth, N.S., was known as “Sgt. Morale” because of his sense of humour and calm demeanour.

“He enjoyed a challenge, and though he didn’t seek the spotlight, he would take the difficult jobs without complaint,” said Menard, adding Taylor was passionate about his job mentoring troubled youth back home in Canada.

“He brought the same enthusiasm with him to Afghanistan.”

Chidley, born in Cambridge, Ont., and raised in Langley, B.C., could always beat his friends and fellow soldiers at video games. “He was a great driver, the one you wanted for difficult tasks,” said Menard.

Cam Chidley wrote about his son on Facebook Thursday: “My ex-wife Sian and I have lost our son Garrett in Afghanistan yesterday. God help us and please watch over our daughter Devon, and our son Joe.”

McCormack, based in Edmonton, was remembered as a team player who was passionate about his family and looking forward to soon marrying his fiancee.

“He was a very caring individual who always lent a helping hand to others,” Menard said. “He always had a way of raising morale by making the rest of the section laugh.”

Lang, too, was soon to be married.

In a statement he released Thursday, Lang’s fiance said her death “is the darkest and most painful moment of my life.

“I am absolutely devastated by the loss of my dearest Michelle — my partner, my best friend, and the love of my life,” said Michael Louie.

Louie, said he’s been overwhelmed with messages of condolences.

“It makes me feel really good to see all the people that Michelle has impacted or has touched,” he said. “It comes as no surprise to me whatsoever, though.”

Although new to Kandahar, Menard said Lang “touched many of us” through her sensitivity and ability to connect with people.

“Michelle . . . was a young, dynamic reporter who strove to excel at her job,” he said. “[She] was passionate about life and inspired those around her.”

Lang, 34, was just two weeks into her first stint in Afghanistan and was the first Canadian journalist to die there since the Canadian military mission began in 2002.

Brig.-Gen. Michael P. Jorgensen, commander Land Force Western Area, praised the soldiers and Lang for their sacrifice.

“The thoughts and prayers of the entire military family are with those brave soldiers who were killed or wounded, with their families and with Michelle Lang of the Calgary Herald and her family,” Jorgensen said. “Journalists embedded with our troops in Afghanistan take the same risks and expose themselves to the same dangers and discomforts as our soldiers do. They should be commended for this, as they, too, leave the comforts of their Canadian lives and their families to report from Afghanistan.”

Wednesday was an especially bloody day in Afghanistan. In addition to the attack on the Canadians, eight American civilian workers died in a suicide bomb attack on a U.S. military base close to the border with Pakistan, officials said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for both attacks. “This work is done by us,” Yusuf Ahmadi, a spokesman for the Islamist insurgent group, told AFP.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper recognized the “heavy hearts” of Canadians and offered his sympathies.

“The five men and women who perished are true Canadian heroes,” Harper said.

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff said it was “with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of four brave Canadian soldiers and a Canadian journalist in Afghanistan . . . Their service exemplifies the very best in courage and selflessness, and their deaths will not be forgotten as our mission to build a safe and secure country for the people of Afghanistan continues.”

“Our country has suffered a terrible tragedy in the loss of Canadian journalist Michelle Lang and four brave soldiers. … My thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends and loved ones,” said NDP Leader Jack Layton.

Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean, too, reacted with sadness to the deaths and injuries.

“It reminds us of the underhanded, blind, daily violence facing our Canadian soldiers, journalists and humanitarian workers in Afghanistan, who are working alongside the local population already hard hit by decades of terror.

“Our thoughts are with the families, the loved ones and the colleagues of the deceased. We also wish the injured a prompt recovery.”

Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai offered his condolences Thursday.

“The Afghans will not forget your sacrifice,” Karzai said in statement reported by Canadian Press. “Your children sacrificed their lives for the people of Afghanistan and the threat of terrorism.”

The deaths bring the toll of Canadian soldiers to 138 since the mission there began in 2002.

At least 17 journalists from around the world have been killed in Afghanistan since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, according to statistics maintained by the Committee to Protect Journalists, an independent, non-profit organization.

Australians rack up record debt

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:21 pm

Australian households are in record levels of debt, and for the first time have surpassed American levels.

Reserve bank figures show household debt - the combination of personal and mortgage debt - is equivalent to Australia’s GDP.

That means every adult owes an average of $74,000.

Analysts warn that the financial crisis that rocked Main Street in America could well hit Australian families in 2010.

Economics Professor Steve Keen at the University of Western Sydney says it is a sign that families are under financial stress.

“We now have an enormous proportion of income that has to be devoted to paying back interest payments,” he said.

“Even if you leave aside the interest payment fact, if you want to reduce your debt now where it would have taken you on average for Australians back in 1990 it would have taken just a few months, now it would take them a year to get back down to the zero mark.”

However the Council of Social Service says there is already a debt crisis and it will only get worse unless the Federal Government steps in, with the numbers of new families asking charities for help set to increase next year.

The council’s director, Alison Peters, says the Government needs to boost its support.

“We think there needs to be more support given to organisations like local neighbourhood centre like the major charities to be able to assist those people who are really desperate for assistance,” he said.

“A number of our organisations have already reported to us and indeed to the Government that they are seeing not only new families coming forward seeking assistance but many families are coming back again and again for assistance because they really are struggling.”
