top city breaks for under £100

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:42 am

I’m not going to lie to you. In order to take a two-night weekend break for less than £100pp, including flights and hotel, you are almost certainly going to have to go with Ryanair. Or possibly EasyJet. This means bun fights and grumpiness and the long shot of being left stranded and unloved on the wrong side of Europe. Also, you aren’t going to be flying out Friday, back Sunday. It’s much, much cheaper to go Saturday to Monday… so you’ll just have to bunk off work on Monday instead of Friday.

Which is no biggie.

While I’m at it, your hotel will not be five-star. It probably won’t even be three-star. In estate-agent parlance, it is likely to be well located but basic. Because the pound doesn’t go nearly as far on the Continent as it did a year ago.

But, and it’s a big, gyrating, sexy but, you are getting a fabulous long weekend in one of Europe’s great cities for just £100pp. Which is about one-eighth of a pensioner’s gas bill. The hotels might be basic but they’re great value and perfect as a two-night sleep-and-go base… and those Ryanair flights? No problem after a 7am Stansted bloody mary or two. No problem at all.

Getting a better night’s slumber

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:46 pm

Your brain clock is a cluster of brain cells in the hypothalamus that determines your sleep-wake time and is regulated by light and darkness, explains Delwyn Bartlett, a sleep psychologist with the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in Sydney. Here’s how to keep it on track:

* Wake up at the same time every morning, even on weekends. This is more important than going to bed at the same time every night. "Waking up at the same time cues your brain to release sleep-wake hormones at the right time," she says.

* Get the light right. Melatonin, the sleep hormone that gets your brain ready for sleep, needs diminishing levels of light to help it kick in. Bright light - or staring at your laptop - can delay its effects. Keep lights in the bedroom low before you go to sleep. Have curtains that let you wake up to morning light.

* Check your blankets. To feel sleepy, your body temperature needs to fall. An overheated bedroom or an electric blanket turned up too high can make it hard to sleep. But a warm bath an hour before bed can help your temperature fall. The warm water artificially raises your temperature, which then has to come down once you’re out of the bath.

* Think about what you drink and eat before bed. Drinks containing caffeine - coffee, tea, cocoa and cola - can keep you awake. Although caffeine’s stimulant effect is strongest in the first hour or so after taking it, it can still be in your system eight hours later. While alcohol helps you doze off quickly, drinking too much too close to bedtime can backfire. One drink might be OK but too much can fragment your sleep because of falling blood-alcohol levels that can wake you up later in the night.

Google reports sharp decline in profits

Google Inc. reported sharply lower fourth-quarter profits Thursday from bad investments, while its core business showed resilience amid the global recession.

google1 The results, which beat analysts’ expectations, were enough to dispel investor concerns about how the company is weathering the gloomy economy. But at the same time, the earnings highlighted the fact that the Mountain View Internet leader isn’t immune from the downturn.

Google said fourth-quarter profit fell 68 percent to $382 million ($1.21 per share), from $1.2 billion ($3.79) a year ago. Much of the decline was attributed to a $1.09 billion charge for soured investments in wireless provider Clearwire and in the AOL Web portal, owned by Time Warner.

An Introduction To Ipod Mini

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:59 am

Ipod Mini was first released on February 20, 2004 and it delighted many. Being a smaller edition of Apple Computer’s Ipod first generation moveable audio player, it’s variety in colors (comes with limited colors, silver, gold, blue, pink, and green) appealed to the broader market. The Ipod Mini could be operated with both Macintosh and Windows PCs.

The iPod mini’s quality was the click wheel, where four buttons were placed above the wheel. To use one of the buttons, a user had to drive the wheel edge inner over one of the labels. The click wheel system is now normally used in the fourth and fifth generation iPods and it is as well been used in the iPod nano. Above the wheel was the monochrome display, which offers the menus or information of the presently selected track. The new generation of ipods normally has a colored screen display.

The battery life of its first generation iPod mini was 8 hours, which led to some quarrel on its small duration. This problem was later solved with the second -generation models that had a battery life of 18 hours. Like the larger iPod, the iPod Mini as well supported a crowd of file formats like MP3, WAV, AIFF and other MP4 features. It maintained its perfect integration with the iTunes Music Store and the files being downloaded there. Software wise, the iPod Mini was as consistent as the innovative iPod units.

Besides if there was something high-quality to be said about this amazing iPod mini, it’s the choice it gave the consumers when getting a digital audio player. The Ipod mini struggled directly with most renowned players like Creative’s Zen Micro and the Digital Networks Rio Carbon. The smaller display was actually one line smaller than the last models, thus warning it’s on-screen track information show to title and artist only, taking the album information off.

As the Ipod family started to grow, the Ipod mini was laid to rest when Apple launched the opening of the iPod nano. The iPod mini did not then exist in the market and stopped its production. Though it looks the iPod Mini only stayed for a while, its sway as the initiate of the click wheel would always be remembered.
